Policlinico San Matteo, known as Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo, founded in 1449, is one of the oldest and largest teaching hospitals in Italy. It is located in the city of Pavia, about 35 km south of Milan. The hospital has over 3,300 physicians, as well as more than 1,000 beds.
When the hospital moved it was decided that a general hospital would be created in the area of Niguarda (a neighbouring municipality, which had become part of Milan in 1923). This hospital was designed by Giò Ponti and inaugurated in 1932. It kept the name Ca' Granda, whilst the new general hospital took the name Ospedale Maggiore.
The Sant’Orsola Hospital was founded in 1592 just outside the walls of the city (now ring road). In 1860-69, finally, it became home to the clinics of the Faculty of Medicine. The hospital was dedicated to Saint Ursula (now the patron saint). In 1978 it merged with the adjacent Malpighi Hospital built in the ‘70.
The Gemelli University Hospital (Italian: Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli) is a large general hospital in Rome, Italy. With 1575 [ 1 ] beds, it is the second-largest hospital in Italy, the largest hospital in Rome and one of the largest private hospitals in Europe. [ 2 ]
