These spiders are solid and strong-looking with reddish-brown to black bodies. The males have distinctive long red or red-orange legs from the femora downwards. The females have legs the same color as the body. Females are known to reach a body length of about 25 mm, or just under an inch, including the chelicerae. Males are smaller with a body ...
Phidippus johnsoni, the red-backed jumping spider or Johnson jumping spider, is one of the largest and most commonly encountered jumping spiders of western North America. It is not to be confused with the unrelated and highly venomous redback spider ( Latrodectus hasselti ).
Orange-legged swift spiders are mostly black in appearance, with white spots along most of the body and orange front legs. They are typically 6–7 mm in length. Distribution and habitat

Phidippus audax are commonly referred to as "bold jumping spiders" or "bold jumpers". [8] The species name, audax, is a Latin adjective meaning "audacious" or "bold". [8] This name was first used to describe the species by French arachnologist Nicholas Marcellus Hentz, who described the spider as being, "very bold, often jumping on the hand which threatens it". [9]
Females can reach 12 mm body length, males 7 to 11 mm. Both sexes have blue-green iridescent chelicerae, a black cephalothorax and limbs, and a bright red abdomen with a median black stripe (similar to the female P. johnsoni). Between the black and red areas on the posterior part of the dorsal abdomen there are two minute white spots.
The upper surface of the abdomen is brown and hairy. The legs display alternating light and dark brown bands. The undersurface of the abdomen is black, with two white spots. This species is relatively variable in color and sometimes pattern, but is most commonly seen sporting a rusty-red or golden orange color.
The first segment of each leg is red while the remaining segments are banded in black and pale gray. The underside is dark with four white spots on the abdomen which is red at the tip. [ 4 ] As in other species in the genus Neoscona , there is a characteristic longitudinal groove on the carapace which separates them from species in Araneus .
