English: Block diagram of a tuned radio frequency (TRF) receiver, the simplest type of amplifying radio receiver circuit. It consists of one or more tuned RF amplifiers, each consisting of a tuned circuit which functioned as a bandpass filter followed by a radio frequency (RF) amplifier; a detector (demodulator) to extract the audio waveform from the radio carrier wave; followed by an audio ...

A crystal set receiver consisting of an antenna, a variable inductor, a cat's whisker, and a filter capacitor. A crystal receiver is very simple and can be easy to make or even improvise, for example, the foxhole radio. However, the crystal radio needs a strong RF signal and a long antenna to operate.
Block diagram of a superheterodyne receiver. The RF front end consists of the components on the left colored red. In a radio receiver circuit, the RF front end, short for radio frequency front end, is a generic term for all the circuitry between a receiver's antenna input up to and including the mixer stage. [1]
An RF receiver module receives the modulated RF signal, and demodulates it. There are two types of RF receiver modules: superheterodyne receivers and superregenerative receivers. Superregenerative modules are usually low cost and low power designs using a series of amplifiers to extract modulated data from a carrier wave.
A variable capacitor (or sometimes a variable coupling coil called a variometer) was used, with a knob on the front panel to tune the receiver. The RF stages usually had identical circuits to simplify design. Each RF stage had to be tuned to the same frequency, so the capacitors had to be tuned in tandem when bringing in a new station.
An electro-optic (EO) powered dielectric antenna captures the free-space RF signal. The embedded optical link provides complete electrical isolation between the air interface and the electronic circuitry, which is located only after the photodetector (PD). It functioned as a TRF receiver with one stage of RF and one stage of audio amplification. The radio frequency (RF) signal from the antenna passes through the bandpass filter C 1, L 1, L 2, C 2 and is applied to the grid of the directly heated triode, V 1. The capacitor C 6 bypasses the RF signal around the audio transformer winding T 2 which ...
