"Midnight Rider" is a song by the American rock band the Allman Brothers Band. It was the second single from their second studio album, Idlewild South (1970), released on Capricorn Records . The song was primarily written by vocalist Gregg Allman , who first began composing it at a rented cabin outside Macon , Georgia .
The song was released as a B-side to "Kiss Me Quick" in Europe in 1963. [3] In francophone Belgium, "Night Rider" was listed as a double A-side with "Kiss Me Quick", reaching number 29. [4] [5] Later, the song was used for the soundtrack for Elvis' 1965 film Tickle Me and included on the accompanying soundtrack EP as well. [6] [7]
Gregg, who had struggled to write in the past, became the band's main songwriter, composing songs such as "Whipping Post" and "Midnight Rider". [44] The group's self-titled debut album was released in November 1969 through Atco and Capricorn Records , [ 45 ] but suffered from poor sales. [ 46 ]
