The Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate (founded as the Sisters of the Holy Ghost) are a Catholic female religious order based in Texas. [1] They are the oldest order of sisters in the state, established in 1893 in San Antonio by Margaret Mary Healy Murphy, who created the group in order to help with her mission of educating African Americans in San Antonio.

She known for founding the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate, the first order of sisters in the state of Texas, as well as the first free private school for African Americans in San Antonio, Texas.

The eldest of fifteen children, [1] Gustavo Garcia-Siller was born on December 21, 1956, in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. He entered the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit religious order in Mexico City in 1973. [2] The Missionaries sent him to the United States in 1980 to minister to migrant workers in California. [3]

The painting was acquired for the friars of San Antonio by Fr. Raymon Gomez, one of the four original friars who arrived in San Antonio in 1926. He was instrumental in bringing to fruition the friars’ dream of building a national shrine to be dedicated to the newly canonized St. Thérèse.
Holy Cross was opened in 1957 by the Archdiocese of San Antonio. At the suggestion of the Brothers of Holy Cross it was established as a four-year college preparatory school for boys. The first class of 84 boys enrolled as freshmen on September 3, 1957, with a faculty of three Brothers and a chaplain.
