Margaret Mary Jane Healy Murphy, SHSp (May 4, 1833 - August 25, 1907) was an Irish-American Catholic religious sister and early civil rights activist. She known for founding the Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate, the first order of sisters in the state of Texas, as well as the first free private school for African Americans in San Antonio, Texas.
Holy Cross was opened in 1957 by the Archdiocese of San Antonio. At the suggestion of the Brothers of Holy Cross it was established as a four-year college preparatory school for boys. The first class of 84 boys enrolled as freshmen on September 3, 1957, with a faculty of three Brothers and a chaplain.
The Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate (founded as the Sisters of the Holy Ghost) are a Catholic female religious order based in Texas. [1] They are the oldest order of sisters in the state, established in 1893 in San Antonio by Margaret Mary Healy Murphy, who created the group in order to help with her mission of educating African Americans in San Antonio.
