Gwent Police (Welsh: Heddlu Gwent) is a territorial police force in Wales, responsible for policing the local authority areas of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen. The force was formed in 1967 by the amalgamation of Monmouthshire Constabulary and Newport Borough Police .
The first Gwent Police and Crime Commissioner was Ian Johnston. He was head of CID in Gwent Police from 1994 until 1999, and was awarded the Queen's Police Medal for distinguished service in 2003. [2] He later served as President of the Police Superintendents' Association of England and Wales from 2007 to 2010.
