To create a text replacement: Copy the fraction on your iPhone the way you want it formatted. Then go to Settings> General> Keyboard> Text Replacement> Add> Put the correctly formated fraction in phrase ex: ¼ > put the unformatted fraction in the shortcut ex: 1/4.
It has a checkbox for 'all digits' that will show fractions under the 'Digits - All' section of the sidebar. You can find it in the Character Viewer by typing 'half' in the search box: SG. Thank you. I guess I didn't find it intuitive enough to spell out the word 'fraction' in Special Characters.

Just use the character viewer to create text substitutions for each string 1/2 : ½ , etc. The Text Substitutions are just one tab over, "Text" on the Keyboard system prefs. Scroll down in the character pane on the right and you'll see the fractions that are built into the Mac OS fonts. If you single click on one of them then click on the insert button (at the bottom of the window) Mac OS will insert that fraction into whatever document you're working on.
I'm using Yosemite and can't find the 1/2 symbol. I've checked in the character viewer and keyboard prefs.
