I 've been using formaldehyde for years and I mounted the first "legal" gator killed in Florida back in 1988. Anyhow soaking the head is about the only way to go on the big boys. Treat the head as if it were a big fish head,use a sawsall and clean out the head bones cutting something like wedge shape out.
So, I have this alligator head I’m trying to preserve. I want to do the standard skin-on preservation. I harvested this gator September of 2023 and have had the head in my freezer ever since, because I am a super procrastinator. I finally got around to doing it. I dethawed it last week and immediately started removing all the meat from the back.

Flesh the 'gators head just about like a big fish head for a skin mount. the skull is really tough so if it looks like you don't need it cut it out.
