In general, the citation information should be cited as it appears in the original source. Many direct quotations can be minimized in length by providing an appropriate context in the surrounding text. A summary or paraphrase of a quotation is often better where the original wording could be improved. Consider minimizing the length of a quotation by paraphrasing, by working small portions of the quotation into the article text, or both.
Paraphrasing your sources without plagiarizing them takes some practice. It can be easy to unconsciously mimic the structure and word choice of the original source. Copying words, structure, or phrases from the original source — even when cited to that source — violates Wikipedia’s copyright policies and is a form of plagiarism.
