The AC Cobra, sold in the United States as the Shelby Cobra and AC Shelby Cobra, is a sports car manufactured by British company AC Cars, with a Ford V8 engine. It was produced intermittently in both the United Kingdom and later the United States since 1962.

The Cougar II was showcased at the Chicago Auto Show that same year and the following two years at the New York World's Fair exhibition. Using the frame of the Shelby Cobra, the Cougar II housed a V8 engine, fiberglass body, and retractable headlamps. Ultimately, it was never manufactured because it was determined to be too costly for Ford.
Shelby and Moon installed the V8 engine and a Borg-Warner T-10 transmission into the AC body, [3] creating the first of the cars Shelby named "Cobra". In order to expand production Shelby needed a facility of his own. Coincidentally Lance Reventlow's lease at his shop in Venice, Los Angeles, where his company built Scarab racing cars, was expiring.

Carroll Hall Shelby (January 11, 1923 – May 10, 2012) was an American automotive designer, racing driver, and entrepreneur.. Best known as a designer for his involvement with the AC Cobra and Mustang for Ford Motor Company, he also developed the Ford GT40 with racing legend Ken Miles, the car that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969.
