The world's first permanent disc golf course went into the ground in 1975 at Oak Grove Park in Los Angeles County, California. [3] Approximately 75% of the world's disc golf courses are located in the United States. "Steady Ed" Headrick [7] and Dave Dunipace are two inventors and players who greatly impacted how disc golf is played. In 1976 Headrick formalized the rules of the sport, founded the Disc Golf Association (DGA), the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), [8] the Recreational Disc Golf Association (RDGA) and invented the first formal disc golf target [9] with chains and a basket. Held annually since 1982, the event crowns world champions in several divisions in the professional disc golf fields.
The Disc Golf Pro Tour was founded in 2016 by Steve Dodge and Nate Heinold. [1] The DGPT is the highest level of competition in professional disc golf . The tour currently operates two tours, the Elite Series and the Q-Series (formerly the Silver Series), both featuring men's and women's professional divisions.

Maple Hill Open is an annual disc golf tournament held at the Maple Hill Disc Golf Course in Leicester, Massachusetts. For six years, the event (formerly known as The Vibram Open ), had the largest MPO and FPO payout of any stop on the PDGA National Tour .
