Born May 1, 1947, in Santa Ana, California, she is the daughter of Davis and artist William Grant Sherry (1914–1995), Bette Davis's third husband. Davis and Sherry divorced in 1950. As an infant, B. D. appeared briefly in her mother's film Payment on Demand (1951).
Davis's only public response to the allegations was an open letter to Hyman in her 1987 memoir, This 'N That, in which she wrote in part, "Your book is a glaring lack of loyalty and thanks for the very privileged life I feel you have been given. If my memory serves me right, I’ve been your keeper all these many years."
