Edgecombe County (/ ˈ ɛ dʒ k ə m / EJ-kum or / ˈ ɛ dʒ k oʊ m / EJ-kohm) [1] [2] is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 48,900. [3] Its county seat is Tarboro. [4] Edgecombe County is part of the Rocky Mount, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area.
North Carolina's 1868 constitution adopted a "Township and County Commissioner Plan" for structuring local government, largely inspired by provisions in Pennsylvania's constitution. Townships were created under the county unit of government, with every county divided into them, and each given their own township board.
The council appoints a city manager to serve as chief administrative officer of day-to-day affairs of government. As of 2022, the current city manager is Peter Varney. [72] Since the city straddles the Nash County-Edgecombe County border, the commissions of both counties are also involved in governance of the city. [73]
After Halifax County was separated from Edgecombe County in 1758–59, the original county seat of Enfield was within Halifax. Tarboro officially was designated as the county seat of Edgecombe in 1764. For four years the county government had met in Redman's Field. The North Carolina State Legislature met here once in 1787 and again in 1987.

The Rocky Mount, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties – Edgecombe and Nash – in eastern North Carolina, anchored by the city of Rocky Mount. As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 152,392. [2] It is commonly referred to as the Twin Counties. [3]
