Deemed university, or deemed-to-be-university, is an accreditation granted to higher educational institutions in India by the Department of Higher Education. [1] As of 14 November 2023 [update] , the UGC lists 124 institutes which were granted the deemed to be university status. [ 2 ]

[7] [8] In India, SASTRA was ranked 38 among engineering colleges by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2024, [11] 28 among universities, [10] and 14 among law colleges and 47th overall. [8] According to this list, the first institute to be granted deemed university status was Indian Institute of Science, which was granted this status on 12 May 1958. In many cases, the same listing by the UGC covers several institutes.
