This is a list of original Roman Catholic hymns. The list does not contain hymns originating from other Christian traditions despite occasional usage in Roman Catholic churches. The list has hymns in Latin and English.
On Eagle's Wings" is a devotional hymn composed by Michael Joncas. Its words are based on Psalm 91 , [ 1 ] Book of Exodus 19, and Matthew 13 . [ 2 ] Joncas wrote the piece in either 1976 [ 3 ] or 1979, [ 1 ] [ 4 ] after he and his friend, Douglas Hall, returned from a meal to learn that Hall's father had died of a heart attack. [ 5 ]
The song in two stanzas has remained in the repertory of church hymns, [1] used mainly during Eastertide, [2] but also for communion and funerals. It appears in several regional sections of the Catholic hymnal Gotteslob, as GL 770 in Cologne, [3] as GL 780 in Limburg [4] and Münster, [5] and as GL 783 in Speyer, [6] among others.
The Hyde version of the hymn specifically, which is more commonplace than its counterpart, has been used in at least three hymnals, [6] [7] and was the version used in a cover of the hymn by the Catholic religious sisters congregation, the Daughters of Mary, Mother of Our Savior, for their likewise-named 1998 album "Mary of Graces". The hymn is popular with some Irish Catholics, especially at funeral services. [ citation needed ] The song tells of the story of Knock in County Mayo , Ireland , where there was an apparition of the Virgin Mary , Saint Joseph , and Saint John the Evangelist at the south gable of Knock Parish Church in 1879.
