Finally, enter the letter to bear a macron from the keyboard. First type ⌥ Option+a (this means to hold down the ⌥ Option key and then press a). Type in the letter you wish to place a macron above. Congratulations! You have now typed in a letter bearing a macron. Note that not every character can be combined with a macron in this manner.
The Icelandic keyboard layout has a separate key for Æ (and Ð, Þ and Ö). The Norwegian keyboard layout also has a separate key for Æ, rightmost of the letters, to the right of Ø and below Å. In Vim the digraph is 'AE' for Æ and 'ae' for æ. (Press Ctrl-K in Insert mode.)
That’s much faster and simpler than searching the hard drive, then keeping a little window open for it. So does Mr. Allen mean that no one needs a keyboard layout with macrons? What about Latin students? I am studying and teaching Latin and need to actually TYPE letters with macrons continually, not occasionally copy and paste them.
