The campus was formed on July 1, 2024, by the splitting of Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) into Indiana University Indianapolis (IUI) and Purdue University in Indianapolis. It inherited the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology and Computer Science from IUPUI, while other academic divisions became part of IUI.
IUPUI was located on a 285-acre (1.15 km 2) campus west of downtown Indianapolis. The Purdue University programs at the Purdue Indianapolis Extension Center awarded their first two-year degrees in 1947. [23] The IUPUI split between Indiana University and Purdue became official in July 2024 and the new Purdue University in Indianapolis was launched.
