Mexico rests mostly in the North American Plate. Beginning approximately 50 kilometres (31 mi) from the United States border, the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range extends about 1,250 kilometres (780 mi) south to the Río Santiago, [7] where it merges with the Cordillera Neovolcánica range that runs east–west across central Mexico.
