When Minnesota was organized as a state, 57 of the present 87 counties were established. The last county to be created was Lake of the Woods County in 1923. [2] The names of many of the counties allude to the long history of exploration. Over ten counties are named for Native American groups residing in parts of what is now Minnesota.
At the 2000 census, [1] there were 4,672 people, 1,573 households and 1,267 families residing in the township. The population density was 139.0 inhabitants per square mile (53.7/km 2 ). There were 1,650 housing units at an average density of 49.1 per square mile (19.0/km 2 ).
In the township the population was spread out, with 33.5% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 34.7% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 6.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 104.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.1 males.
