Tillamook County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon.As of the 2020 census, the population was 27,390. [1] The county seat is Tillamook. [2] The county is named for the Tillamook or Killamook people, a Native American tribe who were living in the area in the early 19th century at the time of European American settlement.
Sometimes known as "the town that fell into the sea", it was a planned resort community founded in 1906 on Tillamook Spit, a small stretch of land that forms one wall of Tillamook Bay. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Bayocean's post office was established on February 4, 1909, and by 1914, the town's population was 2,000. [ 2 ]
The Lewis and Clark expedition recorded in 1806 that 2,400 Tillamook people resided on Oregon's coast. [8] As the white settler population increased, indigenous people suffered from newly introduced diseases including smallpox. By 1930 only 22 indigenous people remained in all of Tillamook County. [8]
