Sumter County is a county located in the west-central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, its population was 29,616. [1] The county seat is Americus. [2] The county was created on December 26, 1831. Sumter County is part of the Americus micropolitan statistical area.

A post office called Sumter was established in 1884, and remained in operation until 1954. [2] Like Sumter County, the community is named after Thomas Sumter, a United States Senator from South Carolina. [3] The Webb Family Farm in Sumter was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. [4]
Smithville is located in northwestern Lee County at (31.902073, -84.255336 It is bordered to the north by the Sumter County line.. U.S. Route 19 runs through the west side of the city, leading south 12 miles (19 km) to Leesburg, the Lee county seat, and north 13 miles (21 km) to Americus.
