The Google Groups archive of Usenet newsgroup postings dates back to 1981. [4] On December 15, 2023, Google announced that Google Groups would end support posting or viewing new Usenet content on February 22, 2024, with existing archives remaining available. [5]
Google Groups was the most popular and by far the largest Web-based Usenet archive (consisting of over 700 million posts dating from as early as 1981 [1]) until its advanced search functionality became nonfunctional in February 2015. [2] It discontinued Usenet operation in 2024.
Usenet differs from such media in several ways: Usenet requires no personal registration with the group concerned; information need not be stored on a remote server; archives are always available; and reading the messages does not require a mail or web client, but a news client.
On 12 February 2001, Google acquired the usenet discussion group archives from Deja.com and turned it into their Google Groups service. [2] They allow users to search old discussions with Google's search technology, while still allowing users to post to the mailing lists.
In mid-December 2001, Google unveiled its improved Usenet archives, which now go more than a decade deeper into the Internet's past than did the millions of posts that the company had originally acquired when it bought an existing archive called Deja News.
For example, Google's Groups (formerly DejaNews) is an archive of Usenet articles trace back to 1981. [3] Discussion group archives are sometimes an effective way to find an answer to very ambiguous questions.
A Usenet newsgroup is a repository usually within the Usenet system, for messages posted from users in different locations using the Internet. They are discussion groups and are not devoted to publishing news. Newsgroups are technically distinct from, but functionally similar to, discussion forums on the World Wide Web.
Gmane permits users to access this mailing list as if it were a Usenet newsgroup instead, by using the news server news.gmane.io and group name gmane.science.linguistics.wikipedia.english. Messages posted to the list by email will appear in the Gmane newsgroup, and vice versa.
