The gastrocnemius muscle is prone to spasms, which are painful, involuntary contractions of the muscle that may last several minutes. [5] A severe ankle dorsiflexion force may result in a Medial Gastrocnemius Strain (MGS) injury of the muscle, commonly referred to as a "torn" or "strained" calf muscle, which is acutely painful and disabling. [6]
It arises from the lateral condyle of the tibia; from the upper three-quarters of the anterior surface of the body of the fibula; from the upper part of the interosseous membrane; from the deep surface of the fascia; and from the intermuscular septa between it and the tibialis anterior on the medial, and the peroneal muscles on the lateral side.
The next step of identifying the POL femoral attachment is done by locating the gastrocnemius tubercle (2.6 mm distal and 3.1 mm anterior to the medial gastrocnemius tendon attachment on the femur). If the posteromedial capsule is not intact, the POL attachment site is located 7.7 mm distal and 2.9 mm anterior to the gastrocnemius tubercle.
My doctor told me I had a gastrocnemius tear in my right leg. I did this playing softball going from second to third. He said no more softball this year. He said it was so swollen that there was some internal bleeding. I am suppose to take aleve 2 times a day and if it doesnt get better, then I will need some therapy.

Baker's cysts arise between the tendons of the medial head of the gastrocnemius and the semimembranosus muscles. They are posterior to the medial femoral condyle . The synovial sac of the knee joint can, under certain circumstances, produce a posterior bulge, into the popliteal space , the space behind the knee.
Posterolateral: biceps femorus and peroneal nerve retracted laterally; lateral gastrocnemius and soleus retracted medially; Posterior: done with the patient laying on stomach (prone); retract semimembranosus (one of hamstring muscles) until gastrocnemius becomes visible and continue until postero-medial capsule is visualized
the medial gastrocnemius (subtendinous) bursa between the medial head of the gastrocnemius and the joint capsule [2] the anserine bursa between the medial (tibial) collateral ligament and the pes anserinus – the conjoined tendons of the sartorius , gracilis , and semitendinosus muscles .
