The original Nethersole School of Nursing (NSN) was the 1st hospital-based training school for nurses in Hong Kong set up in 1893 under the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. [1] CUHK Nursing was originally established as the Department of Nursing under the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK in 1991.
All nursing programmes in Hong Kong have to be approved by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong. Registered nurses must undergo at least 3 years of training, either via theoretical and practical training at a nursing school based in hospitals, or via a pre-registration nursing programme at a university or college; whereas, enrolled nurses must take a programme of at least 2 years in duration. The hospital started as an outpatient clinic founded by the Baptist Convention of Hong Kong in 1956 and evolved into a general hospital in 1963. [1] [2] [3] In 1983, it opened a nursing school.
