In mathematics, the term undefined refers to a value, function, or other expression that cannot be assigned a meaning within a specific formal system. [ 1 ] Attempting to assign or use an undefined value within a particular formal system, may produce contradictory or meaningless results within that system.
Slope illustrated for y = (3/2)x − 1.Click on to enlarge Slope of a line in coordinates system, from f(x) = −12x + 2 to f(x) = 12x + 2. The slope of a line in the plane containing the x and y axes is generally represented by the letter m, [5] and is defined as the change in the y coordinate divided by the corresponding change in the x coordinate, between two distinct points on the line.
Functions which are undefined at = have no -intercept. If the function is linear and is expressed in slope-intercept form as f ( x ) = a + b x {\displaystyle f(x)=a+bx} , the constant term a {\displaystyle a} is the y {\displaystyle y} -coordinate of the y {\displaystyle y} -intercept.
It means that when log(g(x)) is a linear function of x, the function g is exponential. With linear functions, increasing the input by one unit causes the output to increase by a fixed amount, which is the slope of the graph of the function.
Indeterminate form is a mathematical expression that can obtain any value depending on circumstances. In calculus , it is usually possible to compute the limit of the sum, difference, product, quotient or power of two functions by taking the corresponding combination of the separate limits of each respective function.
In mathematics, the term linear function refers to two distinct but related notions: [1] In calculus and related areas, a linear function is a function whose graph is a straight line, that is, a polynomial function of degree zero or one. [2] For distinguishing such a linear function from the other concept, the term affine function is often used ...
The slope is +∞ or −∞ depending on whether you travel on that vertical line up or down. Tricky business. :) Oleg Alexandrov 00:50, 3 January 2006 (UTC) The fact that both work doesn't make it unmeaningful. +∞ slope means vertical line as does −∞. The things which are unmeaningful are like 0/0 or ∞/∞.
Using functional notation, this means that, given , either () is in Y, or it is undefined. The set of the elements of X such that f ( x ) {\displaystyle f(x)} is defined and belongs to Y is called the domain of definition of the function.
