The airport is in the Santa River valley, 20 kilometres (12 mi) northwest of Huaraz, at the village of Anta. Comandante FAP Germán Arias Graziani Airport is north of the village and has scheduled service from domestic carrier LC Perú to the international airport in Lima, the national capital. Following the May 31, 1970, earthquake and the resulting avalanche, the airport was created by the U.S. Air Force in June 1970.
The airport has a number of amenities to service the multitude of tourists which visit the city of Cusco. A number of years ago, it was the first Peruvian airport to make use of jetways. The runway is paved and is 3,400 meters (11,200 feet) long and 45 meters (148 feet) wide. The long length of the runway is due to the elevation of the airport.

From Chimbote via the Canyon del Pato (184 km), the first 64 km until Chiquicara are paved, then a dirt road, and finally the last 22 km before Caraz again paved.
