The 12 mini is listed as 13hrs. So while reviewers are crapping on the battery life, that only truly applies when compared directly to the other, more recent flagship phones. For anyone with a X, it’s a bonafide upgrade in every aspect even before accounting for battery decay.
The reason is because the increased the price of the base iPhone 12 by 100$ this year and didn’t change the pro pricing. The pro also doubled the starting capacity. So you’re paying about 130$ more to get a more premium phone with lidar sensor and an extra telephoto lens. You also get the nicer looking finishes.

12 pro has those 2 + 1 telephoto camera. pro max same as 12 pro but a better sensor for one of the cameras, forgot which one. I’d recommend the Pro. The Pro Max is great if you’re into the size, plus it has better battery and a better camera, but you pay a premium and the size is substantial. It’s also heavy.

The 13 has the same chip and camera system as the 14 with a little less RAM. Absolutely not worth buying a 14 if a 13 would do the job for you. The 12 is still a great phone and would last you the 4 years but probably not more. I upgraded from the XR to 13.
