According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of 36 square miles (93 km 2), of which 35.98 square miles (93.2 km 2) (or 99.94%) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.026 km 2) (or 0.03%) is water. [2] Dorr Township is one of seventeen townships in McHenry County. It covers portions of Woodstock, Crystal Lake, Lakewood and Bull Valley.

This area was long the territory of Algonquian-language tribes, specifically the Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi. The first permanent European-American settlers in the township arrived in 1845. The first settler in the community of Dorr came in 1856, and arranged for the town to be platted in 1869. It received a United States post office in 1870.

A ninth rest area used to exist near Cutlerville on the northbound side of US 131, [21] but this location was demolished on January 22, 2001, to make way for the interchange with M-6. The department wanted to build a replacement near Dorr, in northern Allegan County, but the plans were canceled in late 2001. [22]
