Aldinga / ɔː l ˈ d ɪ ŋ ɡ ə / is a suburb of Adelaide in South Australia located about 45 kilometres (28 miles) south of the Adelaide city centre in the City of Onkaparinga.It is a small suburb (population around 573 in 2016), about a kilometre east of the edge of the larger suburb of Aldinga Beach, and about 3 km (1.9 mi) from the beachfront.
The locality extends from Snapper Point [note 1] (at the southern end of Aldinga Bay) in the north to Carrickalinga Point [note 2] about 18.7 km (11.6 mi) to the south-west. The conservation park consists of land in the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Willunga consisting of section 821 and land identified as allotments 4, 14, 15 and 100. It came into existence on 7 November 1985 by proclamation under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 in respect to section 821.
The portion of the aquatic reserve located within Gulf St Vincent includes two reef systems that are exposed at low tide - the Horseshoe Reef located off the coast at Christies Beach and the Port Noarlunga Reef located off the coast at Port Noarlunga. The Port Noarlunga Reef is connected to the shore by a jetty. [5] [7]
The conservation park includes all the islands within the group with the exception of all or part of the southernmost island (known as Lighthouse Island) in the South Neptune Islands where land has been reserved for ongoing use by a lighthouse and the waters within 2 nautical miles (4 km) of the mean low water mark of both groups of islands.
