The Olympic Federation of Ireland is the new name for the Olympic Council of Ireland, since 15 September 2018. The Irish Olympic Council was founded in 1920, while the Irish War of Independence was pitting the Irish Republic proclaimed by Sinn Féin against the Dublin Castle administration of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
The OFI sees itself as representing the island rather than the state, and hence uses the name "Ireland". [2] It changed its own name from "Irish Olympic Council" to "Olympic Council of Ireland" in 1952 to reinforce this point. On 7 April 1919, Broy smuggled Collins into G Division's archives in Great Brunswick Street (now Pearse Street), enabling him to identify "G-Men", six of whom would be killed by the IRA. [7] Broy supported the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 and joined the National Army during the Irish Civil War , reaching the rank of colonel .
O'Flanagan subsequently became an Olympic official and served on the International Olympic Committee from 1976 to 1994. On his retirement he was made an honorary lifetime member of IOC. He died in a Dublin hospital in 2006, at the age of 86, after being admitted for heart problems.
