Center is a city in Shelby County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,221 at the 2020 U.S. census. It is the county seat of Shelby County located in deep East Texas. [4] It was named for its location near the center of Shelby County; the community is near the Louisiana border.
The original settlement was called "Possum Bluff". It was purchased by Pierre Lavine from Bill Morrison, for a team of oxen in 1886. A Texas Historical Marker was erected in 1967 on Highway 12 near the Texas / Louisiana border stating this information. The marker was later moved to the front of the Deweyville Public Library.
Josefa Garcia Park is in Alton. It previously had 5 acres (2.0 ha) of land. In 2018 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) gave a $500,000 grant to increase the park's size to 55 acres (22 ha). The park includes a memorial to the 1989 bus accident, with 21 crosses, one per deceased victim, and a statue of Jesus Christ.
