As part of the sale, 102.3 changed its format and began simulcasting a classic rock format with the Bloomington-Normal signal known as "The Eagle" and changed call letters to WDQX. AAA hired the high-profile WJBC morning show of Scott Robbins and Nancy Thiel to do mornings on the new station.
The station first signed on the air as WLOC-FM on August 1, 1964. [2] The station initially simulcast programming from its then-AM sister station WLOC (1150 kHz). On April 2, 1979, it began broadcasting a Variety format, featuring a mix of country and adult contemporary music.
Einstein took the 'HFS call letters with him and WLOM-FM 99.1 became WHFS (FM) in Autumn 1983. Not only did 99.1 operate with higher power than the 102.3 facility, but its transmitter was located halfway between Washington and Baltimore, providing a strong signal to both markets. Eventually Einstein's group sold WHFS.
On August 13, 2007, WEKL traded frequencies with sister country outlet WIBL (105.7 The Bull), moving the WEKL format to the much stronger signal at 105.7. The station was re-launched as "Eagle 105.7", while WIBL moved to 102.3, becoming "102.3 The Bull."
