Still standing near the Wal-Mart is the McDonald's, United Bank (formerly Chevy Chase Bank and Capital One Bank), and an international supermarket (formerly Safeway) that were in business during the Capital Plaza Mall tenure. The former Hot Shoppes building, long vacant, was demolished on August 10, 2015.

In the current location of the mall was an open mall with outdoor walk ways connecting it which included stores such as Hutzler's and Hochschild Kohn's department store. The mall was named in honor of Lake Walker, a man-made lake and park on the property prior. The mall opened with approximately 30-50 stores, [12] with some of the first stores being relocated from the then nearby indoor Village Mall (now an outdoor strip mall called Montgomery Village Center since circa 1991) and absorbed onto the property. Four other stores followed in the 1960s and 1970s. They included Reisterstown Road Plaza in 1962, Timonium Mall in 1969, Westview Shopping Center (an addition to a 1958 Mall) in 1969, and the store's final branch at Golden Ring Mall in Rosedale, Maryland, in 1974. Suburban stores were converted to ADG's Caldor discount chain in 1983.
