Glass casting is the process in which glass objects are cast by directing molten glass into a mould where it solidifies. The technique has been used since the 15th century BCE in both Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Modern cast glass is formed by a variety of processes such as kiln casting or casting into sand, graphite or metal moulds.
Feathering – creating feather-like patterns on a glass by dragging a metal tool across the surface of a newly applied wrap. Frit – crushed glass often melted onto other glass to produce patterns and color; Incalmo – the grafting or joining together, while still hot, of two separately blown glass [bubbles] to produce a single [bubble]. [4]
These are separated by a passage or a constriction (float glass). In the melting tank, the batch is melted and refined. The melt then passes through the passage into the working tank and from there into the feeder (forehearth). There the glass is removed. In hollow glass production (hollow glass), the glass machine below is fed with glass gobs.
In 1933, the company used the process of fusing glass to steel to make a large single-piece glass-lined brewery tank. Over the next 32 years, it made more than 11,000 glass-lined tanks. In 1936, the company patented the glass-lined water heater.
The sand that is in contact with the casting is called facing sand, and is designed for the casting on hand. This sand will be built up around the pattern to a thickness of 30 to 100 mm (1.2 to 3.9 in). The sand that fills in around the facing sand is called backing sand. This sand is simply silica sand with only a small amount of binder and no ...
