St. Joseph, often called St. Joe, is a town in, and the parish seat of, rural Tensas Parish in northeastern Louisiana, United States, in the delta of the Mississippi River. [2] The population was 1,176 at the 2010 census. The town had an African-American majority of 77.4 percent in 2010. [3]
The St. Joseph Historic District in St. Joseph in Tensas Parish, Louisiana was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It included 99 buildings, 71 of them being contributing buildings, in an 80 acres (32 ha) area roughly bounded by Panola Ave. and Front, Hickory, 4th, and Pauline Streets in downtown St. Joseph.
St. Joseph Parish first began to organize in 1813 and was founded as a mission to Assumption Church in Plattenville in 1817. [3] Two years later a small wooden church building was constructed near the current church cemetery. The Rev. Antoine Potini was assigned as St. Joseph's first pastor. [3]

Plantations in the vicinity of Lake St. Joseph circa 1866 including Hard Times and Winter Quarters. The site was critically damaged in a tornado on April 4, 2011. As of February 2022, the site remains closed indefinitely and the State of Louisiana currently has no plans or a set date for reopening the site for public use. [7]
Father De Smet. Joseph Robidoux settled the area that is now the city of St. Joseph in 1826. The Rev. Pierre-Jean De Smet, SJ was the first priest to visit the area in 1838. He met with Robidoux and expressed his desire to establish a chapel in his settlement. [2]
It is bordered by St. Peter to the north, St. Andrew to the northeast, St. David to the east, and St. Paul to the south. It has an area of 120.1 km 2 (46.37 mi 2), and a population of 5,765. [2] Saint Joseph Village is the largest settlement in the parish; it was used as a filming location for 1988's The Seventh Sign. [3]
