Traditionally, the pass marks the northeast end of the Tehachapis and the south end of the Sierra Nevada range. The route is a principal connector between the San Joaquin Valley and the Mojave Desert.
San Marcos Pass (Chumash: Mistaxiwax) [1] is a mountain pass in the Santa Ynez Mountains in southern California.. It is traversed by State Route 154.The pass crosses the Santa Ynez through a southwestern portion of Los Padres National Forest, and connects Los Olivos (and the Santa Ynez Valley) with Santa Barbara, California along the Pacific coast.

Patchen Pass lies on the border between Santa Clara County to the north of the pass, and Santa Cruz County to the south. [3] It is traversed by California State Route 17, which runs from north to south through the pass, [1] and is the eastern terminus of California State Route 35, which runs along the ridgeline to the west of the pass and continues to the east as Summit Road.
