Amboy is a historic village in north central Illinois, located in Lee County, 12 miles south of Dixon, Illinois, President Ronald Reagan’s hometown. Our population is just over 2,500. Amboy is richly and uniquely American and Midwest.
Our History & Our Future. Amboy was chartered in 1854 as an agricultural center and a railroad town. The Illinois Central Railroad, which once had its headquarters here, attracted people, businesses, persons of different faiths from its very beginning in 1852 when they started buying land.
The Amboy City Park features a baseball field, playgrounds, restrooms, picnic shelters, a wooded area and carved wood sculptures. The Amboy City Park is on East Main Street, past El Vista Drive.

Please get your permit at city hall before you begin building. Permits are needed for all new construction (room additions, garages, carports and fences) plus siding and roofing. If you have any questions, call Building Inspector Don Clayton at 973-1536.
