J. J. Newberry Company is a historic five-story building in El Paso, Texas, United States. It was built by the J. Calisher Realty Company in 1911, and it was known as Calisher's. [2] The Calisher company was a store first opened in El Paso in 1881. [3] Early tenants included the YMCA (on the two top floors) and the Border National Bank. [2]
It was built as a five-story for Richard Caples in 1910, [2] and it was "the first reinforced concrete structure erected in El Paso." [ 3 ] The fifth floor was leased to the Y.M.C.A. [ 2 ] In 1915, the building was purchased by J.G. McGrady, who leased the basement and the first floor to F. W. Woolworth Company . [ 2 ]
