In 1916, the first Tongan immigrants settled in the town of Laie on the island of Oahu, marking the beginning of the local Tongan community. [1] After the end of World War II , more Tongans arrived in Hawaii .
Much of the U.S. Tongan community resides in California. In San Mateo County (0.7% of the county's population) in the San Francisco Bay Area, there are over 5,000 Tongan Americans, mainly concentrated in Daly City, East Palo Alto, San Mateo, and San Bruno. There is a Tongan community in Oakland, of about 1,500 people (0.3% of Oakland's population).
Wolfgramm was born 1 November 1939 in Neiafu, Vava’u, Tonga. His parents were Konrad Uhi Wolfgramm, and Alilia Funaki Toutai Fulivai. [1] He was of Tongan and German descent. He was the nephew of pioneering Steel Guitarist Bill Wolfgramm who along with Bill Sevesi made many recordings on the Viking Records label.
