Oxcarbazepine, sold under the brand name Trileptal among others, is a medication used to treat epilepsy. [ 3 ] [ 5 ] For epilepsy it is used for both focal seizures and generalized seizures . [ 6 ] It has been used both alone and as add-on therapy in people with bipolar disorder who have had no success with other treatments.
The diagnosis of bipolar disorder in children has been heavily debated for many reasons including the potential harmful effects of adult bipolar medication use for children. PBD is similar to bipolar disorder (BD) in adults , and has been proposed as an explanation for periods of extreme shifts in mood called mood episodes.
A variety of other agents have been tried in bipolar disorder, including benzodiazepines, calcium channel blockers, L-methylfolate, and thyroid hormone. [2] Modafinil (Provigil) and pramipexole (Mirapex) have been suggested for treating cognitive dysfunction associated with bipolar depression, but evidence supporting their use is quite limited.
