The hospital, which replaced both the Sheffield Royal Hospital and the Sheffield Royal Infirmary, was designed by Adams, Holden and Pearson and built in two phases; the first phase, a three-storey out-patients department was completed in 1971. [1] The second phase, the main building, was opened by the Prince of Wales in 1978.
The hospital has its origins in the Sheffield Radium Fund, which was established in 1914. [1] The fund was used to create the Radium Centre in 1930 and subsequently the Sheffield National Centre for Radiotherapy in 1945. [1] Weston Park Hospital was officially opened in April 1970. [1]
The Northern General Hospital is a large teaching hospital and Major Trauma Centre in Sheffield, England. Its departments include accident and emergency for adults, with children being treated at the Sheffield Children's Hospital on Western Bank. The hospital is managed by the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The hospital has its origins in the Dental Department of the Sheffield Royal Hospital which was established in 1897. [1]The facilities at the Dental Department became cramped and so Colonel Sir Charles Clifford, [2] who had commanded 126 Brigade Royal Field Artillery, donated land for a new purpose-built facility and funding for dental equipment in 1935. [3]
In December 2013 the Trust was one of thirteen hospital trusts named by Dr Foster Intelligence as having higher than expected higher mortality indicator scores for the period April 2012 to March 2013 in their Hospital Guide 2013. [7] It was put into a buddying arrangement with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. [8]
