Knox Farm Historic District is a historic farm complex and national historic district located near Cleveland, Rowan County, North Carolina. The Robert Knox House was built between 1854 and 1856, and is a two-story, single-pile, three-bay vernacular Greek Revival style frame dwelling. It has a two-story rear ell, one-story rear kitchen ell.
The town dates from 1831 but was not incorporated until 1833. The first post office in Cleveland—which was named Cowansville at that time—was established on 18 March 1831 with John Cowan the first postmaster. On 7 January 1856, prior to the US Civil War and the completion of the Western Carolina Railroad, the town was renamed to Rowan Mills.
On 7 January 1856, before the Western North Carolina (WNC) Railroad was built, the post office and thus the town in the vicinity of present-day Cleveland were renamed to Rowan Mills, getting this name from a large plantation nearby owned by Osborn Giles Foard (1820-1882), who was also the first Rowan Mills postmaster.
