In 1803, most of the land for modern day Kansas was acquired by the United States from France as part of the 828,000 square mile Louisiana Purchase for 2.83 cents per acre. In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S. state. In 1861, Neosho County was established.
Chanute (/ ʃ ə ˈ n uː t /) is a city in Neosho County, Kansas, United States. [1] Founded on January 1, 1873, it was named after railroad engineer and aviation pioneer Octave Chanute. [6] [7] As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 8,722. [4] [5] Chanute is home of Neosho County Community College.

Matthews was killed by the 6th Kansas Cavalry under Gen. James G. Blunt in fighting at Chetopa, Kansas on Sep. 18, 1861. Neosho Rapids was previously called Italia then Florence, and was laid out in 1855. [5] It was named Neosho Rapids in 1857 from the whitewater on the Neosho River.
