It dates back to the era of slavery in the United States. An early performance of the song was in the 1870s by the Fisk Jubilee Singers.
Here, a terrified child calls out to his father when he sees an apparition of the sinister Erl King. The dissonant voicing of the dominant minor ninth chord used here (C 7 ♭ 9 ) is particularly effective in heightening the drama and sense of threat.
