The 301.6-cubic-inch (4.9 L) GMC inline six was produced from 1952 to 1960, when it was replaced by the V6. It has a square bore/stroke ratio of 4 by 4 inches (101.6 mm × 101.6 mm). This is the largest raised-deck engine. It was originally designed for the GMC military M135 and M211.
The Chrysler Slant-Six is the popular name for an overhead valve inline-6 engine produced by Chrysler Motors between 1959 and 2000. Featuring a reverse-flow cylinder head and cylinder bank inclined at a 30-degree angle from vertical, it was introduced in 170 cu in (2.8 L) and 225 cu in (3.7 L) displacements for the 1960 model year.
An early problem with the fan drive-belt jumping off the pulleys was solved by making the groove in the idler pulley deeper and adding belt guides. A metal bellows thermostat modulated either a ring valve on early engines or a set of damper doors on later ones to regulate the flow of cooling air. [5]: 40 Engine oil is also used as a coolant.
A harmonic balancer (sometimes called crankshaft damper, torsional damper, or vibration damper) is the same thing as a harmonic damper except that the balancer includes a counterweight to externally balance the rotating assembly. The harmonic balancer often serves as a pulley for the accessory drive belts turning the alternator, water pump and ...
OHC 230 cu in (3.8 L) inline-6 A single overhead camshaft (SOHC) design was introduced by Pontiac in the 1966 model year as the standard engine in the Tempest . Offered also in 1967, the 230 cu in (3.8 L) OHC 6 shared internal dimensions with the overhead valve Chevrolet straight-6 engine it was based on, [ citation needed ] but had unique cast ...
The straight-six engine (also referred to as an inline-six engine; abbreviated I6 or L6) is a piston engine with six cylinders arranged in a straight line along the crankshaft. A straight-six engine has perfect primary and secondary engine balance , resulting in fewer vibrations than other designs of six or fewer cylinders.
The Hemi-6 valves are angled apart (splayed) 18 degrees (included angle) along the crankshaft axis, and the intake valves are as large as 1.96 in (50 mm). The 6 intake and 6 exhaust valves open slightly towards each other and away from the cylinder wall, which results in less "shrouding" of the valves and greater airflow potential.
To replace these two engines, a new and very large six cylinder was launched in late 1936 (331 cu. in.), which grew to 413 cu in and was las used in the C-3 Series [clarification needed] in 1956. In 1932, the Ford flathead V8 's launch shook up the market, expanding the demand for larger engines to even entry-level brands.
