Ellsworth County was established February 26, 1867. The county was named after the old Fort Ellsworth , named in honor of 2nd Lieutenant Allen Ellsworth of the 7th Iowa Cavalry (Company H), who supervised construction of the fort in 1864 during the American Civil War . [ 4 ]

Ellsworth Township covers an area of 34.22 square miles (88.6 km 2) and contains two incorporated settlements: Ellsworth (the county seat) and Kanopolis. According to the USGS, it contains one cemetery, Memorial. The streams of East Oak Creek, East Spring Creek, Oak Creek, Oxide Creek, Spring Creek and West Oak Creek run through this township.

Ellsworth is a city in and the county seat of Ellsworth County, Kansas, United States. [1] As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 3,066. [4] Known as a cow town in the 1870s, when the Kansas Pacific Railroad operated a stockyard here for shipping cattle to eastern markets, in the 21st century, it serves as the trading center of the rural county.
