Brake lever: a lever for actuating a bicycle brake; Brake shifter or colloquially, brifter (see also Shimano Total Integration, Campagnolo ErgoPower and SRAM Double Tap): combined shifter and brake lever control; Braze-on: a fitting protruding from a frame to provide attachment, typically for cable housings or tire pumps and similar accessories
Typical set of three metal tire levers of the type used on bicycles. A tire iron (also tire lever or tire spoon) is a specialized metal or plastic tool used in working with tires. Tire irons have not been in common use for automobile tires since the shift to the use of tubeless tires in the late 1950s.
MAFAC, or Manufacture Arvernoise de Freins et Accessoires pour Cycles (Arveni Manufacturing Works for Bicycle Brakes and Accessories), was a French manufacturer of bicycle brakes and tool kits. MAFAC was founded in post-war France under the name "Securité", which changed to MAFAC in the Autumn of 1947.
The mechanism was invented in 1927 by Tullio Campagnolo, an Italian bicycle racer. He was frustrated when he attempted to change gears during a race. At the time there was but one cog on each side of the rear hub, so gear changes necessitated stopping, removing the rear wheel, flipping it over horizontally so that the opposite cog is engaged by the chain, and finally reinstalling the wheel.
Tire levers are used for removing the tires from the rim, often for changing the inner tube. Plastic levers are more prone to breakage; metal ones damage tubes, tires, or rims more easily. Cone wrenches (spanners) are needed to dismantle and adjust the hub bearings. Spoke wrenches are used for tensioning the spokes of a wheel.
