The growth of the city during the first half of the 20th century was largely due to the dominant timber industry in East Texas. The town had at least one newspaper prior to 1920s. The county courthouse, a focal point of a city square that featured extensive Christmas lighting in the early 1990s, was severely damaged by a fire in August 2000.
It was a two-story wooden frame structure and was abandoned when the county seat moved to Newton in 1853. It was demolished in the 1920s. [3] The third and current courthouse was built in 1902, replacing one constructed in 1853, also in Newton. It was designed and built by William Martin and Peter Moodie in the Second Empire style. Newton was incorporated as a city (having previously been a town) in 1873, and adapted its then-existing town hall for use as city hall. This building was constructed in 1931, having a dedication of the war memorial on Armistice Day (November 11), 1931, and a dedication of the combined functions on the same day the following year.

Newton County is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 12,217. [1] Its county seat is Newton. [2] The county is named for John Newton, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. Newton County is included in the Beaumont-Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area.
