The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Quito is the Catholic archdiocese in the capital city of Ecuador, Quito. It was established as the Diocese of Quito on 8 January 1545, before being elevated to archdiocese level on January 13, 1848 by Pope Pius IX .
The diocese covers an area of the 3 cantons in the Santa Elena Province: Santa Elena, La Libertad, Salinas and also the territories, that belong to the Guayas Province: Playas Canton and the localities El Morro, Posorja and Progreso. It's divided into 28 parishes and has 29 diocesan and 14 religious priests as per 2022.
Pedro Vicente Maldonado y Flores (November 24, 1704 in Riobamba, Royal Audience of Quito (today's Ecuador) – November 7, 1748 in London, England) was an Ecuadorian scientist who collaborated with the members of the French Geodesic Mission. As well as a physicist and a mathematician, Maldonado was an astronomer, topographer, and geographer.
